Late in the evening of September 30, 1979, fire broke out in the Main Building of Family & Children's Center. Thankfully, no residents or staff members were in the building at the time of the blaze. Though none were injured, the building, with an estimated value of $2 million, was damaged beyond repair. Plans began soon after to build a new administration building on the same site, and in 1981 a capital campaign was launched to raise the funds needed to build a modern facility.
